We must taste the bitter before we can appreciate the sweet.
I went into this with lower expectations due to a few reviews I have seen. And in the beginning, I thought this would for sure be a 3 star read for me. I WAS WRONG! I loved this story!
Celine is a super feisty heroine, which I adore. Not only is she feisty, but she is incredibly smart and observant. Hiding her own dark secrets, she ran from Paris to my beloved city New Orleans. There, she finds herself face to face with a couple of hotties that are also hiding dark secrets.
Sounds like a YA book right? Well, while the beginning was slow for me, I found myself so in love with Celine and intrigued by all of the additional characters. Who is the villain? Why are they giving us a creepy monologue every few chapters? Can we find out how Bastien and Michael look without their shirts on?
The writing was fantastic. I loved the french text that flowed throughout. I did see a few reviews that mentioned that they didn’t like the french because it wasn’t all directly translated. I know a hefty amount of french, enough to read everything in here, and it is mostly translated, just not directly. You don’t miss anything anyway. The french was super comforting and beautiful, but that is probably because I understood it.
This book seemed to be more about who Celine is and what she will do next in her life, rather than solving a murder. There is quite a bit of inner turmoil and less straight action. For a first installment, I felt like the worldbuilding to action ratio was perfect.
If you are looking for vampires. They are here, but not in the way you might think. For me, the subtly and mystery of who is supernatural and “what in the heck is happening” was perfect. I truly enjoyed a dark stroll through New Orleans with all of the creatures at my back.
