Review

Wow. I was so pleasantly surprised by this sequel. I even had dreams about becoming a Heartless. Bring Me Their Hearts was a fun and exciting ride and Find Me Their Bones is even better. It’s a fast-paced adventure that is very hard to put down. I finished this in 2 plane rides!

Spoilers for Bring Me Their Hearts coming up!

We left Zera and crew in the woods after finding out that Lucien’s long dead sister Varia is magically alive. WHAT? And now they all know that Zera is a Heartless. How do Lucien, Malachite, and Fione feel about being lied to this whole time? Let’s just say that no one is hugging Zera and asking her how she feels.

Varia hasn’t just come back to be with her family. She has been hiding from Gavik and now that he is dead, she has a master plan and it includes using Zera in a big way. Varia needs Zera to learn a secret from a Valtrex. You know, the insane, six-eyed dragons that Malachite’s people, the Beneathers, have been keeping underground since the last giant war? Yep. They are NOT cuddly creatures so if you think Zera is walking in and making a new best friend, that is not what is about to happen.

Normally, I don’t do well with teenage angst, but it was so well done in this sequel. Zera feels terrible about lying to the crew and essentially takes herself out of the game. She is here to help Varia and get her heart back. No amount of smoldering looks from Lucien will change that. Maybe. Well she tries. Zera goes a little martyr status, trying to set him up with another girl and blah blah. But her primary focus is getting back her heart, even though she deals with the internal struggle of losing her strength upon receipt of said heart.

Honestly, Zera’s struggles feel real and grounded. She has been told her entire life (that she remembers) that she is nothing, a tool. So she does whatever she can to not be controlled and to regain who she is as a person. At the same time, she doesn’t begrudge anyone their own anger. Fione and Lucien are mad at her? Fair, she lied to them and while she is repentant, she doesn’t ever tell them to get over things. Zera is a real character and I love her sarcasm so much.

I could see an improvement in Wolf’s writing with this sequel. It’s a perfect duo for fast and fun reads!
