Review
I love this buddy read. We are having tons of fun – even though I don’t think any of us love these books. As far as YA fantasies go, this is not going to be one of my favorite series. The world building and writing are solid. I have no issues there. The problem that I have is that I can’t connect with any of the characters. Kestrel is smart and I want to fangirl over her so much, but then she will do something that is so oblivious to the world. She doesn’t understand why the slaves would revolt or have issue with the fact that… you know, her dad TOOK OVER THEIR COUNTRY AND ENSLAVED THEM… Really Kestrel?
The other thing that killed my desire to read these is the insta-love. It’s ridiculous. Arin is aloof and impossible to connect with so Kestrel and his relationship comes out of nowhere.
We will see where the rest of this series takes us, but regardless we are having fun in the buddy read, including some ridiculous Ronan mini fan fic – coming in my next review…

Loved your review! I have never read this one, and I’m not sure if I ever will, all the recent reviews are a bit mediocre..

This is on my TBR list, ive read the first chapter but stopped because a more recent book became available at my library. But from the first chapter, I liked it. Could be a fun read that’s not heavy with world building or angsty pining teen love

I was looking forward to binge this trilogy and now I’m worried because I hate insta-love. I’ll try to lower my expectations when I finally get around to it. Great honest review btw! 🙂

Happy you guys are having fun! Wish I could have stayed on with you all ❤ And I can't wait for the Ronan fan fic xD
I had the same problems with the book as you, but I ended up loving the book simply because I laughed so hard at times. Sometimes it gets so ridiculous;
Arin locking Kestrel in and being all: "Why are you mad!? Love me!" (That had me laughing for weeks!)

I know!!! And casually making apple turnovers in the kitchen like they are playing house?!! It was so much fun to laugh at. Can’t wait for you to join us on the next one!
